Softball Coaching - Establishing Objectives

Your objectives, when softball coaching, come after you establish your philosophy. There will be objectives for you, your staff, the athletes, and the team. These objectives will come from what you think is important in terms of the game and will be in your mind at every softball hour: during practice, pre-game, game, and the off-season. The athletes will have most of the objectives, because they play the game. Many of these objectives are set to help the athlete reach their peak performance. Team objectives will help you decide if you have really won or lost the game past the scoreboard. If the team gets the majority of its missions done, you should feel like you won even when you really lost the game. It should be the coach's goal to help the players reach theirs.

Free Softball Tips - Giving Signals

When the softball catcher is giving signals, usually to the pitcher, shortstop, or second baseman, the catcher takes a comfortable stance with her trunk up and head facing the pitcher. The right-handed catcher should rest her left forearm on her left thigh with the wrist held up at the top of the knee. Her glove will gently rest along the knee with the pocket facing the other knee so it hides the signals from the opposing coach at third base. It's a good idea for the catcher to signal the second baseman for a pickoff at second or at first, as well as signal the first baseman for the pickoff at first and the shortstop for a pickoff at third.

Softball Fielding Tips - Fake Throws

The softball infield should fake a throw whenever she has no chance of a play on the batter base runner and there are other runners on the bases. This is a much better option than just holding on the softball and not taking advantage of a base runner that is overaggressive rounding another base. The infielder should use a full overhand motion and grip the ball tightly.
